Alícia Homs negotiates on behalf of the S&D a report to strengthen the Single Market in balance with the defense of workers

Socialist MEP Alícia Homs, member of Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL) has been in charge of negotiating on behalf of S&D Group an opinion on the Free Movement of Services with the aim of strengthening the Single Market and achieving a balance between free movement and workers’ rights.

“The Single Market is a great opportunity, as long as it does not serve as an excuse to undermine the rights of workers,” said the MEP.

In the document, the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) is asked to incorporate occupational health and safety aspects as key to strengthening the Single Market in a social and sustainable way, as well as to create fair competition in said market.

The report also calls on the Commission and the Member States to improve EU regulations and coordination between national authorities to facilitate the detection of tax evasion by boosting the role of the European Labor Authority, the creation of the European Social Security Number, and the prompt implementation of the revised Posting of Workers and Enforcement Directive.

“We must promote social and environmental standards that help to avoid dumping situations between Member States and that ensure fair mobility for all posted workers without being discriminated against,” Homs explained.

Finally, the agreed text urges the IMCO Commission to incorporate the principles of the European Pillar of Social Rights, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the European Green Deal, and the Gender Equality Strategy as a key aspect when creating a Sustainable Internal Market.
